| Strenghtening the role of independent media in Moldova (2010) |
|
The aim of the project is to promote development, professionalism, and capacity of the independent local and national media in Moldova.
The project is to strengthen the media's role as moderators of the democratic dialogue between people and politicians, local authorities, and international institutions. The project enables the exchange of experience in the form of internships in Slovakia and seminars done by Slovak experts on investigative journalism in Moldova. Within the duration of the project, 10 professional journalists from different media groups in Moldova (including the journalists from Transnistria and Gaugazia) will come for 2 study visit to Slovakia. During the 5- day stay they will meet with experts on investigative journalism in different Slovak media, NGO experts on corruption in the public sphere, and representatives of the institutions dealing with the media situation in Slovakia. Each study visit aims to gain an overview of the situation of Slovak investigative journalism, media sector development, methods of work, achievements, and constrains. Within the project framework, two Slovak experts on investigative journalism traveled to Moldova to lead two seminars for Moldovan journalists and students of journalism on different topics related to investigative journalism and the practical running of media (Tom Nicholson from SME daily in March 2010 and Zuzana Wienk from Fair Play Aliance in June 2010). The seminars were organized in cooperation with our local partner Independent Journalism Centre (ICJ) and special focus was given to cases related to corruption, conflicts of interest, financing of political parties, public tendering, and the presentation of political candidates in the media before elections. Through analyzing some particular cases of investigative journalism from the recent history of Slovakia, the Moldovan journalists had an opportunity to gain an insight into methodology of reporting, obtaining and verifying information and ethical, legal and practical aspects of the journalism.
